As one of the co-founders of Event Horizon, Merrill started playing guitar thanks to his uncle who owned a music store in Muncie, Indiana. Although Merrill was born on planet Mars, he was raised in Ocala, Florida. After hearing KISS ALIVE! he was hooked. Merrill bought his first Ibanez Iceman in 1978, and his first Les Paul Custom in 1980. He has been a Les Paul fanatic for the last 29 years. He does have a love for the Iceman, and besides Les Pauls, he has an affinity for "pointy guitars," owning one of only 40 made on the planet Earth Gibson Flying V Custom, and a hand-built Hamer Cherry Sunburst, among others. Even though he has a career in aviation, MUSIC is his true passion and the STAGE is what he calls home. Playing in many different bands in the last 30 years from Ocala to Jax, Event Horizon is the culmination of everything music to Merrill. Merrill credits his return to music to his wife (who is also his best friend). "She is the reason I am so involved in my playing. She is my inspiration and my guiding light. When you see my Les Paul 60's classic - that was my gift from her - a guitar that I will be buried with."
